Don't pay the 50$/year for EntreCard -Part II-

Yesterday i wrote about my reasons why i will not pay 50$ to EntreCard, today i want to show you some more reasons.

First of all, how has Entrecard responded to users threatening to leave over the latest changes?
By adding a "cancel account" button to the dashboard!
(in the past you had to write directly to the admin to delete your account)

Aldon from Orient Lodge pointed out that the sponsored ad campaign may lead to some kind of bad publicity for the sponsors themselves when WE the members don't like the ad or the content of the advertiser's page!
But in the end we have to approve most of these ads (if we are allowed?) and with the paid option, it will be more likely that we are NOT ALLOWED to reject sponsored ads (we could opt out by paying).

In the past there have been already some blogs who reported some of these "non-blog" paid ads.
I remember one "ad with the teeth whitening" which was for one or two days nearly everywhere visible on the widgets.

Will there be enough sponsors who buy ads when they are only shown on every 7th pageview?

With the paid ads in April - July 2009, the ads have been shared with EC-paid ads to 50% of the time and the costs have been between 0,60 - 1,20 $ for 1.000 page impressions.

The new ads shall be shown only 15% of the time throughout the 24 hours. In this case the previous price seems to be too high, especially when a lot of members from the TOP 300 (blogs with more than 125 EntreCard-Visitors) would opt-out from the sponsored ad program.

In my opinion, these prices are too high for the new sponsored ads. They have to reduce it to 30 to 50 cents for 1.000 page impressions. I believe EntreCard wants now to cash in most of the money from their members.

ENTRECARD PLAYS the card WITH YOUR FEARS that INAPPROPRIATE ADS WILL BE SHOWN!

Show them that WE are the members who have the power to accept their methods of earning money by pushing the EntreCard down if they really show such ads!
Will there be sponsors willing to pay money when they get -first of all- so less views and second when only 10% of the visitors can see their ad at the bottom of each blog?

What will happen to the ad prices in EntreCard?

I guess ad prices will drop like last time for some blogs in the TOP 100 (mine included) but shouldn't fall more than 50% as the sponsored ads are shown less frequently. This will benefit members who don't click so much, as they can afford in the future again more ads.
I believe it won't affect the amount of visitors, only the ad price will be slightly affected :)

Why i don't pay the 50$ to EntreCard!!!

Now the big news is already more than one day old and a lot of members are not sure if it could be acceptable to pay EntreCard 50 $ for one year to get rid of forced sponsored ads.

Here are my main reasons why i will NOT pay 50 $ to EntreCard:

- i don't get any additional benefits for being a "paid" member except 15% sponsored ads are not shown

I get on the five registered EntreCard-Blogs around 1.000+ page views/day this will result in 150 times a sponsored ad will be displayed.

At the moment the EntreCard members themselves play with the FEAR of inappropriate ads which could be shown (half naked women, religious signs from another belief and so on).

If this is your concern, just place the EC-widget near the bottom where 90% of the visitors don't watch at all and if you get almost only EntreCard (or Adgitize, 80% have both ads) members as visitors who cares if they see these ads as they know it's a sponsored ad?

- the price is too high for this kind of non-sponsor-ad fee 50$/year, 4,17$/month, 14 Cents/day

Let's face it, there are some blogs in the TOP 50 of EntreCard who get more than 300 and up to 450 visitors from EntreCard. There are not many blogs who get the same amount of visitors from search engines when i look at some available statistics from these blogs.

They will show the sponsored ads on average 60 times a day which means for paying 14 cents/day, you pay EntreCard a 2,33 $ CPM (cost for 1.000 non-sponsor-ad page impressions)!
You will never get paid this CPM of 2,33$ from Google Adsense, just have a look in your Adsense-Account at the eCPM (except you got some clicks which don't count for this example)!

If your blog gets just 100 or 50 pageviews a day from EntreCard the numbers are more extreme as you will pay the same amount of $$ to EntreCard instead of less based on your pageviews!
50 page views - 7 sponsored ads shown x 30 days = 210 sponsored ads shown
-> Cost per ad not shown 1,98 CENTS

350 page views - 60 sponsored ads shown x 30 days = 1.800 sponsored ads shown
-> Cost per ad not shown 0,23 CENTS

As the paid ads have been active from April-July 2009 EntreCard charged

1. 0.60 $ for 1.000x shown ads if you advertised in all categories and
2. 1.20 $ for 1.000 shown ads in a specific category.

-> Cost per ad shown 0,06 - 0,12 CENTS

From this point of view a more acceptable price would be between 1 and 2 $/month or give us additional benefits for a price of more than 4$/month, especially for members with less visitors!

Look, what do you get for a referral?
300 ECs, if you would buy this, you would pay 1,80 $.

Why not top up the monthly fee with EC-based benefits for the paying members?
- with 500 ECs,
- with a 25% discount on ads you buy from other members
- featuring them in rotation on the front page/campaign page in the sidebar

I guess such a combination would attract much more members and even members with less visitors to buy this package and let them really feel as PREMIUM members for these premiums!

UPDATE:
Another reason for NOT PAYING THIS FEE is that the new owner himself announced in the forum that at the moment NO SPONSORS ARE IN QUEUE.
At first they want to "try this service with internal promotions of the EntreCard market and perhaps the forum", it could take "weeks or months until outside sponsored ads will find their way into EntreCard-Widgets". It's more about the ability to use the 15% "free air time" of our widget - not necessary that they will fully utilize it in the next weeks!

Saturday Sucks: Summary of EntreCard development

UPDATE:
Just a few minutes ago the EntreCard blog announce that they will POSTPONE the sponsored ads to 5th October + the SMALL FEE program, for 50$/year (4,17$/month) you can opt out completely from the sponsored ad program.

Today i write again about EntreCard as i'm also a little bit concerned about their new developments.
In case you didn't visit some of the other blogs who have already written about the current changes or have not read in the EntreCard forum/blog about the on-going changes and developments, you will have a chance to have a look into these posts from my article.

It's all about the old invention in a new package: paid ads turned into "forced sponsored ads". This was announced on 22nd September in the EntreCard blog.

Difference between the old paid ads and the new "forced sponsored ads":

- No more CashOut program
- In the first few weeks no possibility to reject the ads
- not able to reject all ads when this reject ads-option will be available

The main purpose of these ads is to fund the EntreCard system with the help of the page views of their members.
15% of the Network's INVENTORY (what a nice word they used for the member's resources!) will be filled with sponsored ads per day.
They want to present ads which are Family-oriented and they shall be for everyone acceptable.

When we read now one response in the EntreCard forum from the new owner Andrew Te it sounds for me completely different and much more acceptable.

So, what's going to happen when Sept. 28th comes around?
This is just an "official" starting date we're giving users. We don't have a list of sponsors waiting to take up any of the ad space. If any ads were to run at all, it'll be to promote Entrecard Market (http://entrecard.com/market/) and possibly this forum. It could also mean that we might not run any ads for the next few months. But it's important for us as a company to reserve a percentage of our inventory to sponsors because we do see it as huge revenue model based on other free advertising networks.

This means we might see on Monday the usual logo from EntreCard like we see it on blogs with no current ad running, perhaps with a slightly different message as they promote only the EntreCard Market and the Forum!

With this said, i believe the members can influence this decision!
It's very simple, just follow the way like Shaunalynn and Caledonian Comment already had done it.

"Push EntreCard down" it or "EntreCard is at the end" (bottom of the page) like i want to call.

What will happen when more and more members join in this "Push EntreCard down"-campaign?

This might bring less advertisers into the system and EntreCard has to look for new ways to earn money or just listen more closely to the suggestions of their members.


There are a lot of suggestion given by the members in the forums or in blog posts and comments.

• One of the most read suggestions is a double-ad widget which would display one EC-based ad and one sponsored ad (which should be rejectable).

• Another suggestion is to monetize the Front page and the User pages inside of Entrecard with Google Adsense advertisement (like it can be seen in Blogcatalog).
  
  
• Or they could make a paid premium membership for a small fee which prevents that sponsored ads will be shown on their widget.

Weekly Wednesday Worth Readings: EntreCard

Every Wednesday i publish now posts which i found worth reading and of interest for everyone.

This week i will begin with EntreCard and their on-going developments which shall make them a member-rich and profitable company.

As a round-up of the events last week within EntreCard the following developments have been published in the blog

• on 17th September -> EntreCard launched a referral program
• on 22nd September -> EntreCard announced 15% sponsored ads throughout its network (starting from 28th September on)

In my opinion a referral program was not necessary for EntreCard. It will only cause that there will be more ECs in their economy and when we look at the incentive it's just 30 cents for one referral (taking the old CashOut rate).
It can be abused, too, as it's not clearly written how active a new member should be (1 click daily or 1 click within the 14 day period) and when you don't link your own blogs together but make separate accounts for it under your referral link (and many more ways)!

If EntreCard wants active members they should charge us monthly a membership fee with 10 ECs/day (would be deducted at the end of the month) and new members get 300 ECs as a incentive in the beginning.
In this case every member should drop 300 cards throughout the month (10 cards daily). At the moment there are too many blogs in EntreCard registered as "Just here for the view".


This week's choice for EntreCard's Referral Program!

The second big topic in the last week was mentioned by Laane and then Queen Katherine.

It's about the issue that Virus and Trojans are spreading from several EntreCard Blogs. Me, myself got two times a message to download a "fake" Adobe Flash player update in the previous week.
I recommend everyone NOT to install or download any program which is NOT from the official Website and just POP-UPs while visiting a blog + install a actual virus, malware and spyware scanner!

Now to the third topic which will cause again new confusion and dispute in the EntreCard world as it's now a forced paid ad campaign which will be running in 15% of our daily ad campaigns (and bring EntreCards some $$ so that it can stay FREE FOR ALL OF US).

This new SPONSORED Ad program will start from 28th September on and you will have a choice to reject some of the offered sponsored ads.

Cindy Ung announced that

"the ads will be ALL Family-oriented and will not promote nudity, violence or anything illegal."

Is Paid-to-promote.net a SCAM-program??

I guess many EntreCard and Adgitize members saw this Get paid to Promote at any Location-advertisement on a lot of blogs in the past days because one guy promoted this program in Adgitize ;)

I signed up for this program some months ago but never copied the code in my sidebar until i saw this ad in Adgitize.

As they increased their CPM-Rate up to 4$ for 1000 page views for specific countries (United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, for these countries 2$/1000 page views > Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain), it's a good deal to try it now.
Especially when the payout date should be the 15th and 30th of each month, you wouldn't loose much and we could test if it's now a SCAM-Program or not.

I put the code on 11th September on my blog and the earnings have been counted each day in their statistics. They varied between 5 and 16 $-Cents each day, depending on the location of the visitors and the length of their visit on my blog.

The big surprise came as i opened today my mailbox and found in my spam file a Paypal-Mail. This time it was not a Scam-Mail :) It was the small payment of 0,47 $ from Paid-to-promote. Now i have to put it on all my blog and see if they pay me again on 30th September :)
Anyone else got paid from this program yesterday?

I deleted the Paid-to-promote.net code from this blog (on my other blogs it seems not to be such a big problem) as it appears that many users from the USA, UK and Australia get redirected to some advertiser pages!
